Fig Tree Benefit Breakfast is Wednesday, March 12

The Fig Tree will hold its fifth annual Deepening Our Roots Benefit Breakfast from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, at the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall at Gonzaga University.

“Stories Bear Fruit: Sustenance for the Journey” is the theme of the event, which will be an opportunity for The Fig Tree to uplift stories and insights shared through its pages and website during the past year.

The goal of the event is to move The Fig Tree ahead to build its capacity to share more stories in the region, to connect diverse people and communities, to promote volunteerism and action on behalf of the vulnerable, to explore alternatives to violence, and to share about people who live their faith and values.

“We have covered stories on interfaith dialogue in Africa, Shalom Ministries in downtown Spokane, accessibility in rural churches, West Central Spokane ministries, KYRS’ Persian Hour, green living practices, AmeriCorps, refugees resettled in Spokane, a 90-year-old Habitat volunteer, fair trade roots in our region and much more,” said editor Mary Stamp.

“The theme, ‘Stories Bear Fruit,’ reflects our recognition that stories help spread love, hope, joy, peace, encouragement, patience, caring and other positive ‘fruits’ that mean people in the region make a difference in their communities,” she said.  “We now share some of those stories regularly through The Spokesman-Review, as well as online.”

The Fig Tree produced the Directory of Congregations and Community Resources in 2007 for the first time, expanding its outreach in a compatible project that also helps connect the faith and nonprofit communities in the region.

While there is no charge for the breakfast, guests will be asked to help support the efforts to expand The Fig Tree’s outreach as a monthly newspaper, a website with added features and a cable TV show.
